These rugs are created by the Beni Ourain tribe in the mountainous region of the Middle Atlas Mountains of Morocco, traditionally made to provide warmth during the chilly winters. Characteristically, they are double knotted with a thick, shaggy pile and are muted in their colour pallet, adorned with minimalist/geometric patterns and lines. The designs on each rug is often asymmetrical and mismatched, adding to its charm. Woven from undyed, natural wool, the field is largely cream and the decoration, black or henna-like brown lines, is traditionally woven from black sheep.
